Brighton Marathon 2012 - Gallery of Heroes
We have a glittering array of running events for you to sign up for this year. The Brighton Marathon is nearly upon us and we have a list of the heroes running for us below. We are hugely grateful to these athletes for training through the dark and cold winter months and sweating it out to raise money for our projects. If you'd like to sponsor any of these budding athletes please contact our community fundraiser, Euan Clarke.

Melanie Webster
Melanie is from Chichester and works as a young person's housing advisor.
She says "I feel passionate about the work that Children on the Edge do, their projects and their ethos. I want to support international development work and also need some motivation to get back into running and set a new personal challenge". Melanie has run the Tesco 5 K for Cancer Research, and the Chichester Priory 10 K for St Richard's Hospital and Children in Need. She has this request! "Please sponsor me to support the excellent work that Children on the Edge do internationally. This grassroots charity effects real change through projects for vulnerable children across the globe. I'm not the strongest runner, but your support will motivate me endlessly!". |
Christine Binns
Christine is a Maths Teacher at Ashmole Academy, London. She says "I wanted to run for a charity that supports children in difficult circumstances, giving all children greater opportunities and more chances to enjoy life and achieve all they can".
Christine has run both the Rome and LA Marathon. She has completed the Great North Run for Guide Dogs for the Blind and a smaller half marathon in Marlow for Water Aid. "I hope people will support me in raising money for such a worthwhile charity" says Christine, "I'll train hard to achieve all that I can in the race". |
The Body Shop Team - Littlehampton
Lucy Pavlovic, Carly Kneller and Julie Cromwell are all managers from The Body Shop.
Lucy has run the Brighton Marathon in 2011 for St Catherine's Hospice and this year says "I wanted to help in any way I could to raise the vital funds that Children on the Edge needs to carry on doing the fantastic work they do". For the other two ladies it's their first attempt at a full marathon, although Carly has run the Great South Run four times and Julie has completed 10 K for Sporting Futures in Derbyshire. She says "I have seen not only how passionate Children on the Edge are about simply reaching out and helping the most deprived children, but also how they help to restore their childhoods. That for me is so important.". |
Pete O'Brien
Pete is from Brighton and he teaches at the Sir Robert Woodard Academy in Lancing.
Our community fundraiser Euan Clarke has recently visited the academy to give a presentation explaining what our projects help to achieve for vulnerable children. The academy's “school within a school” ethos enables each learner to be part of a smaller learning community called a Chapter. Pete is the lead tutor for the 'Roddick Chapter', which is named after Anita Roddick. Pete tells us "I have never run a marathon before (or even half a marathon). This is the first time I have done any fundraising for Children on the Edge and I am running as part of my role as charity fundraiser for my Chapter at the Academy". |
Guy Carter
Guy is also from Brighton and teaches at Glyn School in Surrey. Glyn recently raised over £1,000 for our project in Haiti through a series of fundraising events throughout January.
Guy is running both for Children on the Edge and his father's cancer campaign. |
Sophie Gauntlett
Sophie is a recruitment consultant from Orpington who has ran the Great South Run but this is her first attempt at a marathon!
She says "The work that Children on the Edge do is great, and I want to fundraise for a charity where I feel it can make a difference". |
The Firefighters
Chris Daly and Lee Cordwell are both from Southampton and work for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service. Chris did the 2006 Iron man for Children on the Edge and Lee has considerable marathon experience.
Chris says "Seeing the passion of those I've met from Children on the Edge, it is not difficult to be moved by the work they do. I also want to say a personal thank you to Lou and The Body Shop South East Region for helping me raise funds!" |
The Three Musketeers
Izabella Mayne, Greg Gladman and Kerry Laundon aka 'The Three Musketeers', are all from Wileys in Chichester. Izabella has run before for St Wilfred's Hospice, but for all of them this is a first attempt at a full marathon.
Izabella says "I like the idea of supporting a children orientated charity, especially if it's a local one". Perhaps we can rope the musketeers and other Wileys teams into the Chichester half?! |
Anthony Weston
Anthony is the assistant manager of the Swallow Bakery in Chichester. We got to know Anthony when our old office was situated above the bakery with the delicious cupcake aromas wafting up the stairs. We miss it!

Keith Jamieson
Keith is an electrician and fixer from Sidlesham near Chichester. He has already completed the Brighton Marathon for us in 2010 and is returning as a hero for the 2012 to give it another go.
