GETTING BACK TO SCHOOL IN INDIA
In July, as restrictions in India began to lift, our Learning Centres were able to open their doors to students again after months of strict lockdown. The children are delighted to be back, and are currently attending classes every other day. Our Computer Classroom is also back open.
Our classrooms offer a much needed safe space where Dalit children can learn, play and grow. Our teachers will be supporting them to recover from the trauma of the past year and they will allow plenty of time for talking, listening to the children, and offering counselling. Please consider making a monthly gift to ensure that we can continue to help children get back to school and support them as they transition back to the classroom. Children on the Edge supports 31 Learning Centres in Bihar State, India who offer education to over 970 Dalit children. |

GETTING BACK TO SCHOOL IN LEBANON
Our school in Zahle, Lebanon was able to reopen on the 31st May 2021 and all 300 students returned to classes. Throughout lockdown the children were constantly asking teachers when they could go back to school.
Vocational, computing and extra curricular lessons also resumed in June, giving opportunities for the children to learn sewing, carpentry, IT, dance and football. Project Officer Bethany Lanier says, “The joy on their faces as they try something new and have that sense of accomplishment is priceless”. Children on the Edge has been supporting education for 300 Syrian refugee children since 2015. Our work in Lebanon is generously supported by the Players of the People's Postcode Lottery. |
LEARNING THROUGH LOCKDOWN
Throughout the pandemic, we have been providing more than 16,000 children with quality education and support despite our schools being closed for most, if not all of the past 18 months. The children we work with face continual barriers to learning, so for us, this was just the next set of obstacles.
Lockdown learning involved radio lessons, phone lessons, lessons under trees, in tents, in teachers homes and in student’s homes. Backpacks were even stuffed with bright learning materials and carried to children in the most remote mountain areas in Myanmar. School bus drivers in Lebanon turned into delivery drivers, dropping hundreds of lesson packs to the doorways of refugee tents.
