2018 marked yet another fantastic year of fundraising for those who took part in the Brighton Marathon raising an amazing £4,300 for Children on the Edge.

The theme of this year’s Brighton Marathon event was being a ‘Brighton Hero’ and that’s exactly what we think our Children on the Edge fundraisers are. Connor, Esther, Jess and Mabel underwent some tough training conditions, including a lot of snow as they trained for the 26.2-mile course. Now the event is done and dusted, here’s some updates on how the awesome team got on.

Thoughts on the event

Esther, having been a spectator of both the London and Brighton Marathons last year, felt that 2018 was her year to take on the challenge. Raising over £2,000 for Children on the Edge, she said that running the Brighton Marathon was completely unique. “There is truly nothing like it” says Esther, “there is such a sense of community. Because you’re running down the street, people come out of their houses to cheer you on. Some people were handing out fruit and sweets to runners, there is this incredible sense of community”.

Connor described the Brighton Marathon Event by saying “As soon as you get to Priory Park, the atmosphere hits you, you know you’re about to be a part of something special. There’s music, people in costumes and everyone is very excited”.

A heroic effort by all

Connor had heard about how hard running a marathon could be, he said, “I was really worried I wouldn’t be able to walk after, but actually the adrenalin of finishing hits you and I felt amazing, it was worth every bit of hard work and I would do it again”. Connor finished in 4 hrs 28 mins and raised a fantastic £832.

Jess struggles with auto immune problems which impact her energy levels, so the Brighton Marathon was one of the biggest challenges she has ever faced. Raising over £850, Jess was thrilled to find out that the money could go towards providing monthly health checks for 60 children in our Early Childhood Development Centre in Loco, Uganda. She said; “It makes all the cold training runs in the dark worth it”.

Mabel was plagued with injury throughout her training, but she still did an amazing job of fundraising and bravely ran on the day. She said “Thank you for all your support, it’s been invaluable and has really spurred me on. I’m so pleased the money is going to a worthy cause”.

Raising a truly impressive £2082, Esther finished in 4 hrs 57 m, with her Dad, her sister and sister in law running along with her for different parts of the course to keep her going. Talking about her motivation Esther described how, as a teacher “I may moan from time to time about the lack of resources when teaching, or Ofsted looming over our heads, but I cannot imagine even attempting to teach in a tent with no resources, no standards, and children who have lost everything. Children on the Edge can help provide them with some stability in their chaotic lives”.

We’d like to say a huge thank you to all our team this year, for the incredible amount of work they have put into training, running and fundraising. The money raised by these heroes will make a huge difference to the lives of the vulnerable children that we support.

If you are inspired by our Brighton Heroes and would like to be part of the 2019 team, then you can find out more and apply here.
“Thank you to the brilliant team at Children on the Edge. They're a great charity creating real change for children in some of the worst parts of the world.”  Connor Deacon, Brighton 2018
