Over the last 12 months, our partners in India have been intensifying their reach to the most marginalised communities in the Dalit ‘Untouchable’ caste. One of the ways they are achieving this is by relocating nine of our Learning Centres in Patna, so that the most ostracised Dalit children have the opportunity to access quality education.

What a month May has been! Amongst the many UK bank holidays  and the King's Coronation, we’ve had some wonderful highlights from our programmes. These include Moja kids blasting off to space and the newly formed Child Protection Teams in Karamoja inspiring their communities to improve health and hygiene.

We also spoke to teacher Mayassa to find out how she helped create a sense of family at the school we support in Lebanon, and the brilliant Major Mick set sail in his homemade tin boat in London to celebrate the coronation.

In 2022 Children on the Edge started working with communities in the Karamoja region of Uganda, replicating our Child Protection Team model. The Children on the Edge Africa team worked alongside Karamajong community members to identify the needs in the area, which include child neglect and abuse, trafficking, hunger and crime, including a lack of police protection to tackle it, due to the remote nature of the settlements.
After identifying the needs in the area, they started building strong relationships with the wider community including local leaders, teachers and parents, supporting them to establish six voluntary Child Protection Teams for the 39 villages in the Lopoko sub county.

26-year-old mother of two Maria, was elected and joined one of the newly formed Child Protection teams in her area. Since joining the team, she has proved to be a very committed and active member who leads by example to help make her community safer for the children who live there.

The London Marathon is one of the most iconic running races around. Thousands and thousands of people enter the ballot each year to secure their place but many are unsuccessful. Children on the Edge is not one of the charities that is allocated places in the marathon, so the only way supporters can run for us is by being lucky enough to get their own place in the ballot and, in 2023, we were fortunate enough to have two fantastic runners who took part in the event and ran for Children on the Edge - Kelly and Lizzie.

Mayassa has been teaching at the school we support in Zahle, Lebanon since it started back in 2013. After ten years of incredible work supporting Syrian refugee children, she’s leaving to start a new life in the Netherlands. We want to take a moment to celebrate Mayassa’s dedication, and the incredible contribution she has made to building her school family.

Monthly Highlights from COTE April 2023. Health checks in Bangladesh
Picture
2 mins read time
In April, on World Health Day, we celebrated #HealthForAll, as the Learning Centres in Bangladesh reported a decrease in the amount of illnesses amongst the children due to regular health checks in lessons. The following week, Refugee teacher John shared the story of his escape from the DRC and how teaching helped restore his hope.
Our London Landmarks runners kickstarted a month of fantastic fundraising, and were followed by our brilliant London Marathon runners, Kelly and Lizzie you can read all about their marathon challenge here. The fundraising didn’t stop there, with our friends at Montezuma’s organising some eggs-ellent Easter fundraising in their stores.
