End of an era: Our 34 year journey with The Body Shop

With the closure of The Body Shop at Home and major changes to the global business, we want to take this opportunity to thank and honour those we have journeyed with since 1990.

Over three decades, the partnership modelled Dame Anita Roddick’s belief in “business as a force for good” and continued her legacy after she co-founded the charity with our CEO Rachel Bentley in 1990, who began working with The Body Shop the year before.

Across all of our programmes around the world we work with trusted local partners, who know the areas and the communities we support. In Romania, we are working alongside our partners Asociatia Aproape De Oameni (ADO) to support Ukrainian refugees in the city of Iasi.

Whilst this is a newer programme, set up in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Children on the Edge has a long history working both in Romania, and with Marius Aonicesei who is the Director of ADO. We spoke to Marius to find out more about his connection with Children on the Edge, his work with ADO, and the challenges facing Ukrainian refugees in Romania, 15 months after the war first started.

When Russia invaded Ukraine, millions of people fled their homes seeking safety further on in Europe. Governments, businesses and NGO’s worked efficiently, putting robust support systems in place to help Ukrainian refugees.

But not everyone was able to leave when the war first started, some had to stay, others lacked the means or resources to make the journey out of Ukraine.

More than a year since the conflict first started, Ukrainians are still crossing the borders every day, escaping the war and looking for safety. These are the families with greater needs, and less resources.

Ukraine Crisis One Year On: Our Impact

A year ago today (24th February), Russia launched an all-out invasion of Ukraine by land, air and sea. This was the biggest attack by one state against another in Europe since World War II. Thousands of Ukrainian families had no choice but to flee their homeland, taking only what they could carry.

With a history of working in Moldova and Romania, which both border Ukraine, Children on the Edge responded immediately. Thanks to the generous outpouring of support from our community we were able to make an impact as refugees arrived, then throughout the year as they came to terms with the longer term consequences of the war.

Children on the Edge works in coalition with local communities in some of the toughest places in the world, transforming the lives of marginalised children by creating protective environments where they can safely live, play, learn and grow.

Children on the Edge envisions a world in which every child thrives regardless of their geography, ethnicity, gender, or caste. We place children at the heart of everything we do by working hand-in-hand with local communities to restore hope, dignity, and justice; and to actively involve everyone in creating transformation.
