Children on the Edge are supporting our partners, TM Lebanon as they provide food for hundreds of children and families who have been displaced by deadly airstrikes. New cooking stations are now helping to feed more families in Beirut, in addition to the provision of hot meals. Find out how you can support the relief effort through our Emergency Appeal. Recent Israeli attacks in Lebanon which escalated last month, have caused the displacement of over a million civilians. With more than 1,600 people killed, and over 8,400 injured, the country is facing a severe humanitarian crisis. Hundreds of schools have been converted into shelters for families who have fled their homes, but many of these lack fresh water, leaving people in need of food and supplies. Our partners (TM Lebanon) have been preparing and distributing hot meals each day for hundreds of families uprooted by the airstrikes in Beirut. Donations from our amazing community of supporters have already provided funds for over 1,300 hot meals to be distributed. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated. WHAT NEXT FOR THE RELIEF EFFORT?As the conflict continues, the team at TM Lebanon needs to reach more families. They can currently only cook for 600-700 people, so they are now setting up communal cooking stations at other shelters, to help hundreds more families. Nuna Matar, director of TM Lebanon who is heading up their response says, “We are needing to upscale. Maybe we can reach 600-700 people through cooking hot meals, but we need to reach more.” These cooking stations can be used by families to make their own meals and 25 have been set up so far. They include a gas stove, with cylinders and large cooking pots, along with the provision of weekly raw ingredients to cook with, including pasta, rice, lentils, beans, sugar, oil, salt and fresh vegetables. £150 can pay for a burner, gas bottle and a large cooking pot £30 can pay for daily cooking ingredients for 100 people Triumphant Mercy will continue to provide ready made hot meals for families who can’t access a cooking station. As many shelters lack running water for boiling, cleaning up and washing vegetables, families will still rely on this provision. CONFLICT IN LEBANON: BACKGROUNDRecent Israeli attacks in Lebanon are part of the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, the militant group based in southern Lebanon. The attacks, which began in response to rising tensions in the region, have resulted in airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions and other infrastructure. This has led to significant displacement of civilians, who are fleeing the south of the country to escape the violence. The UN estimates there are over a million displaced people who have fled deadly airstrikes. There are limited resources to deal with the influx of people. Schools have been converted into shelters for the displaced, but they do not have adequate facilities to support people. There are growing concerns about a severe humanitarian crisis, especially as winter approaches. Many people from the south of the country, who rely on agriculture, have not only lost their homes, and possessions, but also their livelihoods, as their fields have been destroyed in the bombings.
