End Discrimination: help educate Dalit children in India
Dalit children in India are denied their rights and ostracised from state schools. They need access to education. Through 35 learning centres, Children on the Edge help break the cycle of caste discrimination, encourage children to know their worth and support them to realise their rights. Watch our video to find out how you can help us create pathways to a brighter future for Dalit children through the Big Give Christmas Challenge this December. |

One Gift. Double the Impact for Dalit children.
Donate to our Big Give Christmas Challenge between 3rd-10th December 2024 and your gift will have double the impact thanks to our generous match funders.
Your donation will help to educate Dalit children in India who are ostracised from state schools. You can help them grow in confidence and self-worth, equipping them to thrive. |
THE SITUATION
In India, Dalits are at the bottom of the caste hierarchy and considered “untouchables”. Dalit children face entrenched discrimination, trapped in a cycle of poverty and exclusion. Despite legal protections, they are still denied their rights and face significant barriers to accessing education.
WHAT WE DO TO HELP
Through 35 learning centres in Patna, India, over 900 Dalit children receive informal education and learn about their rights. Here, they grow in confidence and self-worth, creating pathways to a brighter future for all.
For the first time, 100 children will have the chance to enrol in classes where they will prepare to take nationally recognised 'open schooling' primary qualifications - providing them with educational credentials for the first time. This will open up opportunities for further education and employment; breaking the cycle of poverty that Dalit children are trapped in.
In our centres, beyond academic learning, children engage in a wider rights-based programme, to learn about their rights, and how to realise them. 180 children take an active role in 'Children’s Parliaments'; where they lead positive change in their communities.

“When I first started studying at the centre, I did not know anything and was very shy. My friends kept teasing me that I couldn't do anything, but the teachers explained and taught me very well. Whenever there was a competition or celebration, I participated in it, and I’ve won many medals!”
