My name is Desire and I am a teacher at Loco Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre.
I get to meet and work with lots of different people through my job which widens my understanding and creativity. The thing I most look forward to doing in my week is improving my teaching skills and interacting with the children; which makes me happy.
One thing that I’d like to change at the centre is to make sure that all the children are dropped off and picked up by their parents. Before lockdown, many parents stopped bringing their children to the centre, letting them travel to school alone. I’m hoping that by showing them the dangers of letting the children come to school on their own, that they will change their behaviour and begin to escort them again to keep them safe.
There is a lot of child abuse issues in my home town of Kitigoma, where I live. I wish Children on the Edge could extend their support to that area too, as it is clear that child abuse cases reduce in the areas where Children on the Edge work.

Throughout 2022, Desire will be telling us what’s happening in her community in Uganda and about the issues that matter to her.
We'll hear more about what she's doing to make the changes she wants to see in Loco. Watch her first video update, where she tells us all about the importance of creating and using visual learning materials for early childhood education >>> |

LOCO EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT CENTRE
This centre was purpose built in 2016 by Children on the Edge, to provide early years education and support to the most vulnerable children living in Loco slum community.
The centre provides 70 children aged 3-6 with bright and colourful classrooms and an outdoor playspace in which to learn, play and grow. The ECD Centres focus on creating a protective environment for the children at the most vital time in their development, ensuring they have the best possible start in life and are enabled to thrive. |
