Meet Project Officer - Somorjit Das Raju

In all of our projects around the world we work in partnership with local organisations and people from the communities to help create safe, child friendly environments where children can realise their rights and restore the ingredients of a full childhood by generating hope, life, colour and fun.

In the Kutupalong camps where we work in partnership with local organisation Mukti Cox’s Bazar to provide education for 7,500 Rohingya children. We spoke to 28 year old Project Officer, Somorjit Das Raju who is part of the Mukti team, to find out more about his career and his highlights working with children in the Learning Centres.

Meet Somorjit Das Raju

Hi! I am Somorjit Das Raju, working as a Project Officer in the education sector at Rohingya refugee camps.

How did you start your career with Mukti? 
I did not move to this field with a definitive career plan, to be honest. Being the elder one among four siblings, I had to get into a job to support my family of six members. I have a diploma degree in engineering and I had started working in the emergency context at the beginning of 2017, even before the recent Rohingya influx began. ​
What motivates you in your role? 
I like being a humanitarian worker. The urgency of the work, the effort to bring positive impacts amid sorrow and sufferings, helping one of the most vulnerable communities in the world - all these motivate me to continue my work. Because I know, I am making a difference. I have always believed that education will be the game changer for the Rohingya population in future. Hence, I like working to provide quality education facilities to one of the most deprived groups of children in the world.

Day to day, what does a Project Officer in the programme do? 
​My task as a Project Officer covers co-ordination, communication with the camp stakeholders, training, guiding and looking after the (digital) setup in the learning centre. In our project, we have an emphasis on digital learning and fun activities to educate the Rohingya children. 
I have always believed that education will be the game changer for the Rohingya population in future.

What are your highlights from working with Rohingya children in the Learning Centres?
I would never forget the glittering faces of our learning centre students when they saw a projector for the first time in their lives and saw their teachers on the big screen teaching them! I love my job and wish to continue it for several more years.

What impact has the digital programme had on the children’s learning? 
The digital content that we are creating and using in our project has made the students (attendance) more regular in the learning centres and more attentive to their study. This gives me a fulfilling satisfaction of the thought that I am changing the track of an entire Rohingya generation.

New desks in Kutupalong

Last year 500 new desks were given to students in the Learning Centres in Kutupalong. 

Somorjit Das Raju had a fantastic idea to decorate the desks in bright colours with illustrations and words to aid the children's learning.

All the children got involved to help paint the desks. The desks look fantastic and help create a bright, colourful, fun learning environment.
