Monthly Highlights from Children on the Edge: May 2023

What a month May has been! Amongst the many UK bank holidays  and the King's Coronation, we’ve had some wonderful highlights from our programmes. These include Moja kids blasting off to space and the newly formed Child Protection Teams in Karamoja inspiring their communities to improve health and hygiene. 

We also spoke to teacher Mayassa to find out how she helped create a sense of family at the school we support in Lebanon, and the brilliant Major Mick set sail in his homemade tin boat in London to celebrate the coronation.

THE SKY'S NO LONGER THE LIMIT FOR MOJA KIDS

Moja Kids are launching into space! With new visual effects and green screen technology, children in Bangladesh are turning their imaginations into reality.

In one of the latest jam-packed episodes, children shared their talents with stand up comedy and drama skits, jumped in a spaceship to explore the planets, connected with Child Rights Clubs in Uganda and Child Parliaments in India, and even hopped on a broomstick to visit their home villages back in Myanmar.

With an exciting new digital world at their feet, we can't wait to see what Moja kids think up next!

MAYASSA'S STORY

On International Day of Families, we spoke to teacher Mayassa. After fleeing the war in Syria, Mayassa started teaching at the classrooms we support in Lebanon.

Over the last ten years she has taught hundreds of children, creating a safe place in her classroom, and loving the children in her care as if they were her own. 

She told us  “I love the school the way I love my own family… The students were coming from war, and so many of us were traumatised, living in a very chaotic environment in a strange land. The school became a place of joy and safety.”

92 NEW LATRINES IN KARAMOJA

In Karamoja, the Child Protection teams have been inspiring their communities. The newly formed teams have been hosting workshops on health and hygiene and, after attending the workshops, community members decided to put their learning into action, building 92 latrines for the villages in the area.

MAJOR MICK SET SAIL IN CELEBRATION OF THE CORONATION

Over the coronation weekend, Major Mick headed to London with his homemade tin boat - the Tintanic - for a row along the canal in Ladbroke Grove. Major Mick wore his very own homemade crown for the occasion and he even persuaded the Mayor of Kensington and Chelsea to try a spot of rowing in the Tintanic before he set off.

​82-year-old Mick has been rowing at locations across the UK to support our work with Ukrainian refugees in Romania and Moldova. Mick rowed more than 125 miles in 2022, raising over £10,000!
