Children on the Edge has been awarded £250,000 from Postcode Global Trust to fund its work providing education for Syrian refugees. Postcode Global Trust is funded entirely by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Players of People’s Postcode Lottery have raised over £500 million for charities and good causes across Great Britain and internationally. Through this award they will be supporting some of the most vulnerable children fleeing conflict in Syria. ![]() Funds will go to support refugee education and care through a school in Lebanon, including some exciting new programme areas focusing on computer and vocational training. Investment will also be made to strengthen the charity’s Lebanese partners, to ensure sustainability for the programme in the future. Children on the Edge Grants Manager, Sophie Poore says “Initially work here attracted significant support, but five years on the media spotlight has moved on, donors are tired of this protracted crisis, and funding has plummeted. Meanwhile, Syrians are being continually displaced and cut off from services in their own country, whilst those who have fled to Lebanon are in an increasingly difficult position; too frightened to return to a dangerous regime and destroyed economy, but under intense pressure from Lebanon to leave”. The main school supported by the programme is based in Zahle, Bekaa Valley which accommodates nearly 300 children who, until a year ago, were learning in tent schools, supported by Children on the Edge across four refugee camps. Funds made possible by the players of the People’s Postcode Lottery are set to improve opportunities for children here, both helping them recover from what they have been through and ensuring a level of academic progress that will stand them in good stead should a return to Syria be possible. Sophie says. “Gaining this support from the players of the People’s Postcode Lottery is a timely and crucial part of enabling us to support children who have gone unnoticed in the current conflict”.
