Players of People’s Postcode Lottery support over 5,500 refugee children with funding of £250,000 for second year in a row

We are delighted to announce that we will not only be benefitting from a second year of incredible generosity from the players of People’s Postcode Lottery, but funding will be extended to support our work with refugee children in both Lebanon and Uganda. 

Throughout 2020, the Postcode Global Trust donated vital funding to the work we support in Lebanon,  providing education for over 500 Syrian refugee children. No-one could have predicted just how crucial this funding would be, as the pandemic, economic and political crisis, and the explosion in Beirut caused widespread poverty and hardship for both the refugee community and hundreds of struggling Lebanese families. ​

​Sophie Poore, Grants Manager at Children on the Edge says, “Syria and the Democratic Republic of Congo suffer from two of the deadliest humanitarian crises in the world, which have forced millions of people to flee their homes. Unfortunately, after almost 10 years of fighting in Syria, and 23 in Eastern DRC, donors and the media have tired of the refugees affected by these seemingly endless conflicts. This renewed grant will support safe spaces and quality education for 570 Syrian children throughout 2021 and give an incredible boost to our new Early Years programme for 5,000 of the youngest Congolese refugee children in Uganda.”

Having built relationships with 30 communities in the Kyaka II refugee settlement in western Uganda, Children on the Edge are working alongside them to rebuild and regenerate learning spaces, train refugee teachers, provide microloans and develop an early learning programme for thousands of displaced Congolese children, that is completely owned by local refugees. ​

In Lebanon the grant will support safe spaces and quality education for 570 Syrian children. Children and teachers are brought in safely from their camps in dedicated minibuses. Spacious classrooms, a Postcode-funded computer room, a playground, and a variety of workshops provide refugee children with a much-loved haven away from the bleak camps, where they can learn a bespoke curriculum in their own dialect.

​Players of the People’s Postcode Lottery have so far raised over £700 million for charities and good causes across Great Britain and internationally.
