Supporting Children on the Edge - Why Should I Become a Regular Giver?

Children on the Edge works hand-in-hand with local communities around the world to create safe spaces, where children are able to realise their rights. We rely entirely on donations from our amazing community of supporters, who currently fund vital work for over 20,000 marginalised children, and we couldn’t do it without them!

We are so grateful to receive one-off donations from individuals, from fundraising activities and events, as well as fantastic contributions from trusts, foundations and corporate partners.  In addition... an excellent way that you can support us, that really does pack a punch, is a regular, monthly donation.

Did you know that £8 a month could help educate a child in a safe space for a whole year?

BECOME A REGULAR GIVER
Regular income gives us the stability to plan ahead and keep our projects running safely and smoothly for the people we work for:

In Kyaka II refugee settlement in Uganda, we have developed a brand new way of learning which we are currently expanding, to ensure that thousands more of the youngest refugee children can access vital early years education, at the most important stage in their development. Regular income allows us to properly plan and adapt programmes like these, and commit to supporting more children living in some of the toughest situations.

Regular income gives us the flexibility to adapt and respond to emergencies:

As an example from earlier this year, when two devastating fires swept through Kutupalong refugee camp in Bangladesh, destroying several of our learning centres, we were able to quickly set up temporary classrooms and start to rebuild, so that children could continue their learning uninterrupted.
Over the summer, when torrential rain fell in the remote mountain camps in Kachin State, Myanmar, where we support 14 preschools, we were able to get raincoats and rubber shoes for the children so they could still get to school despite the wet conditions.
In Kutupalong camp, a small area is filled with long bamboo canes, which are being constructed together by workers.
Construction began quickly on new classrooms in Bangladesh

On average, for every pound spent by Children on the Edge, 86p goes towards our work with marginalised children around the world.

86p in every £1 goes towards are programmes

Regular, monthly donations to Children on the Edge make a huge difference to the lives of the children we support. Supporters who commit to a monthly donation, of any amount, allow us to plan ahead and focus on doing what we do best. We’re a small charity, with a big reach and you can be assured that your money is spent wisely and where the need is greatest.

Regular income ensures that we can continue to support marginalised children living ‘on the edge’ in the best way possible, as we have done for over 30 years.

Our Running Costs

For every pound we receive, 86p is spent on our programmes supporting marginalised children. The rest covers our running costs, but what exactly are they?

In our UK office, we have 5 full-time and 7 part-time members of staff, plus we have one full-time staff member based in Asia. To help reduce costs, we utilise volunteers wherever we can. We employ professional, talented staff who work efficiently, but who earn modest salaries. Our UK staff work in a clean, bright office in West Sussex. Anything especially fancy or expensive you may see has been donated to us.

But we don’t skimp on areas like research, planning, delivery, safeguarding, data protection, or monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL), as our priority is to provide the best we can for the people we work with. We believe everyone should be treated with dignity.

To maximise how far your donations can go; in each country we work with local partners, local staff and local suppliers. Our UK staff will make the occasional trip overseas to work with these partners in person, but only when it’s necessary.

You can read more on our running costs here, or access further details about our 2021/2022 expenditure in our Annual Report.

How do we treat our supporters?

We try to invest in genuine relationships with our donors. We value your support and want to treat you as an individual.

We like to keep our supporters informed about where their money is going, but without spending money on glossy magazines or letters through your door containing unwanted or unnecessary gifts and ‘freebies’.

We send regular email updates if you want them, and a small, low cost magazine in the post once a year.

We will never ask you to increase your donation and don’t use expensive and invasive street fundraisers or telemarketers to recruit new donors.

We are always happy to answer questions and will gladly provide more information about our projects if you would prefer something more in depth than our email updates. If you are local to us, or visiting Chichester, our office is open and we will happily have a chat over a cup of tea - we love meeting people face to face!
