Supporting COTE at Christmas conference
Picture5 min read time

The Body Shop At Home
has been a passionate supporter of Children on the Edge for decades and this month we popped our Christmas hats on - in near 28 degrees of sunshine - to celebrate with consultants at their Christmas conference.

Moses with his wife and baby
Ben shared Moses’ story; a refugee who fled the Democratic Republic of Congo, who is now teaching young refugees in Uganda in small, outdoor ‘cluster’ groups.

As we head into autumn, we need to train 45 more refugees like Moses to be teachers, so that even more children have a safe place to learn and thrive.

We know you can help make that happen. You can help us raise £45,000 this autumn, to train and support 45 more teachers.

ARE YOU A CONSULTANT WITH THE BODY SHOP AT HOME?

Through your business, you are part of a powerful force for good, changing the lives of refugee children around the world. Thank you.

Every region in the business has a dedicated 2023 fundraising page for Children on the Edge, you can find yours here. Every £1 you raise will count towards your region’s fundraising.

Here are some of the ways you can help support Children on the Edge during your peak season.

HOLD A BIG OCTOBER CAKE BAKE

Why not combine two things you love - Christmas gifting and cake! Our Big October Cake Bake is designed for you to hold your own event, in your way - so why not throw a party this peak, pop on the kettle and get your friends together for some Christmas gift shopping with extra cake!

You can sign up here - and you can download a Host Pack with everything you need; bunting, cake flags, posters, games and join our exclusive Cake Bake Facebook group.

Whether it’s homemade treats and a brew or a last minute dash for prosecco and store bought cupcakes - we don’t mind.

Every brew, every bake and every bite can help change lives.

PROTECTING HANDS AND RESTORING HOPE

Every time you sell a Hemp Hand Protector (30ml), The Body Shop at Home donates £1 to Children on the Edge. It’s the simplest way to share how life changing your products are with your customers. A simple sale that helps to restore hope, dignity and justice for children living on the edge.

By selling two hemp hand creams you can raise £2 for Children on the Edge, which can create a safe space for a child to learn for a week.

PARTY WITH PURPOSE

We shared three simple ways you can easily share Children on the Edge with your customers when you party.

  1. Show our quick 90 second video with your customers or
  2. Grab this quick 60 second script, to share about Children on the Edge or
  3. Use our ice breaker ‘left-right’ game at the start of your party

Our dedicated fundraising team is here to support you every step of the way. Contact Mel at tbsah@childrenontheedge.org - we’re here to help you!

There are plenty of other videos here too, all in your own Body Shop at Home playlist on our Youtube channel.

SHARED HISTORY

Children on the Edge was co-founded by The Body Shop’s founder Dame Anita Roddick in 1990. As Eastern Europe fell apart, the orphanage crisis in Romania hit our screens.

Anita wanted to do something to help, but unlike everyone else, she went to the places where no one was helping; she found the forgotten and overlooked children who were in desperate need of support. She found ‘the edge’, and Children on the Edge continue to operate in this way today.
1990 Anita Roddick sparked the beginnings of COTE
"My passionate belief is that business can be fun, it can be conducted with love and be a powerful force for good." Dame Anita Roddick

CHANGING LIVES TODAY ON THE EDGE

Continuing the spirit of Anita, The Body Shop at Home has supported Children on the Edge for decades, raising more than £3 million.

This long-term support has enabled us to keep working “on the edge” - in refugee camps, slums, and warzones. We support Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, Syrian refugees in Lebanon, Congolese refugee children in Uganda, and internally displaced Kachin children in Myanmar. We work hand-in-hand with local communities; creating safe spaces where young refugees can thrive.

Like Anita, our work is pioneering, entrepreneurial and you will find us in places far from the media spotlight. Working to bring hope and justice for some of the most marginalised children in the world, we support communities to realise their rights and ensure that children's voices are heard.

EDUCATION IS KEY

80% of our work is with refugees - we currently provide education for children in the world's largest refugee camp in Bangladesh, the largest refugee crisis in Lebanon, the most forgotten war in Kachin State Myanmar, and one of the world’s fastest growing refugee situations in Uganda.

When we speak with people living in the refugee camps we work in, they tell us that they are desperate for education for their children.

Education can transform a child’s life and bring remarkable changes.

Children on the Edge works with children under the age of six offering ‘early years education’.

Input at this crucial time of brain development can quite literally change the arc of development and future for a child.

£100 can help provide an education in a safe place for each child we work with (or just less than £2 per week).
